How to update your card on file
Walkthrough for changing the card Stripe charges each month, with the portal URL, step-by-step instructions, plus troubleshooting if the new card is rejected.
Last updated 29 June 2026
Cards expire. Banks reissue. Your monthly retainer cannot go through if Stripe does not have a current card. Here is how to swap it in under two minutes.
Step by step
- Open the client portal at veryseoly.com/portal.
- Enter the email you used at signup. Stripe emails a one-time login link, so there is no password to remember.
- Click the link in the email. It opens the Stripe-hosted portal directly. The URL starts with
billing.stripe.com. - In the portal, find the Payment methods section.
- Click Add payment method, enter the new card details, then click Save.
- Click the three-dot menu next to the new card and choose Make default.
- Optionally, remove the old card with the same menu.
That is it. Stripe will charge the new card on the next billing date.
Troubleshooting
“The login link did not arrive” - check spam. The email comes from stripe@billing.stripe.com. If there is still nothing after 5 minutes, email me and I will trigger a manual reset.
“The new card was declined” - three common causes: (1) the card is registered to a different billing address than the one you entered; (2) your bank flagged the monthly recurring as suspicious (call them, say “expecting a recurring payment from Stripe, please allow”); (3) the card has 3D Secure enabled and the verification SMS did not arrive.
“I want to pay by direct debit instead of card” - Stripe supports Bacs Direct Debit for UK customers. Reply to your last invoice email asking to switch and I will send a Bacs mandate link. Direct debit takes 3 working days to confirm, and your existing card stays as backup until then.
“I would rather pay annually” - if you would prefer to pay your retainer a year at a time rather than monthly, that is fine. Email me and I will generate an annual invoice for the same amount, twelve months in one go. Your retainer rate stays exactly as quoted.
What if the card fails on billing day?
Stripe retries automatically over 4 days. You get an email each retry. On day 5 without a working card, the site does not come down, because I will email you first. The site only comes down if I cannot reach you and no payment lands within 14 days. That is almost never the situation.
There is no lock-in. You can cancel any time, and you have a 14-day refund under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. VerySEOly is operated by TicketWave HQ Ltd (company 17143167). Your bookings and payments are yours: you own the customer relationship.
